Policy Hazardous Materials Waste Management Plan
This organization maintains a waste management plan with
regard to identifying, handling, storage, and disposal of all
wastes according to the current standards of applicable
governing agencies that regulate hazardous materials and
wastes.
This organization participates in ongoing efforts to provide
a safe environment for all employees, patients, and visitors.

The Goal of this plan is to manage risk associated with
handling, storage, use and disposal of all hazardous waste
and materials (HMW); protecting staff, patients, others and
the environment by controlling hazardous materials until
properly disposed.
Establishing and maintaining a hazardous materials
and waste program
Selecting, handling, storing, using and disposing of
hazardous materials from receipt through use and
disposal.
Understand the handling, storage, use and disposal of all
hazardous chemicals.
Understand the handling, storage, use and disposal of all
radioactive materials.
Understand the handling, storage, and use of potential
hazardous energy sources such as x-ray, laser, ultra sound,
etc.
Understand the handling, storage, and use of potentially
hazardous, high risk medications; see Volume 3 for medication
policies.
Understand the handling, storage, and use of potential
hazardous gases and vapors (see Volume 2 for related gases
related to anesthesia policies, see Volume 3 for hazardous
gases related to products such as Gluteraldehyde)
Utilize best industry practices for storing and disposing of
HMW
Education of staff regarding the all aspects of HMW found in
this organization
- Establish written criteria to identify, evaluate,
and inventory hazardous wastes
- Educating and monitoring of personnel that manage or
regularly come in contact with hazardous waste.
- Provide adequate space and equipment for the
effective handling and storage of hazardous
materials and wastes.
- Effectively handle HMW spills or exposures.
Reporting and investigating all hazardous materials or waste
spills and exposures that involve patients, employees.
Responsibility
- The safety officer/committee as well as the Medical
director are responsible for continued development,
implementation and monitoring of the overall plan
- All staff are responsible for adhering to handling,
storage, use and disposal rules related to a
particular hazard, as well as reporting any
concerns or any unsafe conditions immediately.
The organization participates in Chemical Hazard
Communication Program, coordinated through the OSHA Safety
Manual as well as participates in Universal and Standard
Precautions.
Annually or as needed evaluation of the objectives, goals,
scope, and effectiveness of the Hazardous Waste Plan
