Clinical Guideline: Pre-operative antibiotics.
Patients with cardiac history are routinely prescribed antibiotic prophylaxis prior to major surgeries. However, the nature of the procedures we perform at our organization precludes the use of antibiotic prophylaxis. The endoscopic procedures we perform do not violate sterile body cavities and the use of antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated. This rule applies to procedures where biopsy or polypectomy is involved as well.
Furthermore, we only perform procedures on patients with ASA category I and category II patients. AHA , AGA, and ASGE guidelines do not require antibiotics in these patients. Patients with history of severe cardiac disease, or history of cardiac surgery are not candidates for procedures in our office as well.
