Disaster Preparedness: Wind Event

POLICY:
 
In case of a wind event, the ultimate concern is for the 
safety of the patients, visitors, employees and professional 
staff.
 
PROCEDURE:
 
     1.  Move all persons to a safe location. Interior 
         corridors and bathrooms or storerooms without 
         windows are the safest areas in a facility.
 
     2.  Secure all outdoor fixtures, trash cans, etc.
 
     3.  Turn on battery-operated radio or TV for weather 
         advisories.
 
     4.  Provide snacks and water.
 
     5.  Bring flashlights to areas persons are occupying.
 
     6.  Evacuation during a windstorm should not usually be 
         attempted.
 
     7.  Should evacuation seem desirable, the Medical 
         Director* will make a decision to evacuate.  Be sure 
         the area being evacuated to is safer than the area 
         being abandoned.
 
     8.  If evacuation is chosen, follow facility evacuation 
         procedure.
 
     9.  All fires are extremely dangerous during a windstorm.
 

 
 
 
*In the absence of the Medical Director, the senior physician 
or senior administrative person on site will make this 
decision.
 
 
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: HURRICANE
 
Policy
 
In case of a hurricane, the ultimate concern is for the 
safety of the patients, visitors, employees and professional 
staff.  It is anticipated that people will have been 
evacuated consistent with the recommendations of the State 
Department of Emergency Preparedness.
 
If Hurricane Warning Is Issued:
 
     1.  Receptionist is to contact any scheduled patients 
         and advise such patients that the office is closing 
         due to the hurricane warning.
 
     2.  The operating room will function until any surgery 
         underway is completed.
 
     3.  Available staff will attend to the patients in the 
         facility and will follow the procedure outlined 
         below.
 
     4.  If warning is issued during non-working hours, the 
         staff will contact the Medical Director by telephone 
         for instructions as to when work will resume.
