Disaster Preparedness: Flood


POLICY:
 
In case of a flood threat, the ultimate concern is for the 
safety of the patients, visitors, employees and professional 
staff.
 
PROCEDURE:
 
1.  CAUSES
 
    A.  Broken water pipes or main line.
    B.  Excessive rain.
    C.  Broken dam or reservoir.
    D.  Extremely high tide or tsunami.
 
2.  RESPONSE
 
    A.  Shut OFF all utilities.
    B.  Activate any available pump to remove water.
    C.  Toilets can be lifted from floor to create a readily 
        available drain.
    D.  Create dams to direct water to drains.
    E.  Notify Medical Director, Administrator, Building 
        Management, Fire Department, Police Department and 
        Civil Defense.
    F.  Make every effort to provide for needs of patients 
        and staff (snacks, blankets, safe drinking water 
        and shelter).
 
3.  EVACUATION
 
    A.  The Medical Director* will make the decision to 
        evacuate. Be sure the area being evacuated to is 
   safer than the area being abandoned.
    B.  Provide safe and efficient means of transport.
    C.  Secure the facility if it becomes necessary to 
        evacuate.
    D.  Follow evacuation procedures.
 
 
*In the absence of the Medical Director, the senior physician 
or senior administrative person on site will make this 
cision.
