Several levels of infection control will be adhered to during procedures performed at this organization; the level of
infection control utilized will be appropriate to the needs of the procedure to be performed as determined by the staff
member performing the procedure.
GASTROENTEROLOGY PROCEDURE LEVEL
Upper Endoscopy and Colonoscopy are clean procedures, not sterile procedures. Personnel will wear clean gloves, clean protective coat or scrubs and eye protection during the procedure which uses a high level decontaminated/disinfected flexible endoscope.
LEVEL I: CLEAN
This level of infection control will be applied to the most
basic procedures. Personnel will wear clean gloves, eye protection during the
procedure. The area around the field may not be draped. Disposables will be discarded as
soon as possible after the procedure.
LEVEL II: STERILE
This level of infection control will be applied to
complicated or more invasive procedures or to procedures
rendered to a patient who may have a pre-existing wound or be
at high risk for complications due to external factors (e.g.,
co-morbidities). In general, these procedures will adhere to
the most stringent infection control protocol; complete
aseptic technique, outlined in the infection control policy
and procedure manual. We do not perform sterile procedures in this organization
